What it is:
Turmeric is a spice that comes from the turmeric plant; it is part of the ginger family. Turmeric is native to India, requiring a considerable amount of annual rainfall to thrive. It has a warm, bitter taste and is most commonly used as a spice to flavor or colour curries.
What it does:
Curcumin is the main active ingredient in turmeric; it has powerful anti-inflammatory properties and is a strong antioxidant. Unfortunately, curcumin is poorly absorbed into the bloodstream, so it helps to consume black pepper with it, as it contains a substance that enhances the absorption of curcumin.
Adding turmeric to you diet can help improve weight management, improve digestion, boost liver function, ease muscle aches and pains, heal wounds and it is a great immune booster.
How I use it:
I cook with Tumeric almost all the time. The simplest way I like to include it in my diet is sprinkled on my avocado with a little salt and pepper for better absorption and taste. I also love to end my day with a cup of turmeric tea (“Golden milk”). I have mentioned this tea in another blog post, let me know if you would like the recipe. I also cannot imagine chakalaka without tons of turmeric added, not only does it get the colouring perfect but it also makes the chakalaka delish!
